Hawaii's civil unions bill placed on potential veto list, buying Gov. Lingle more time
Gov. Linda Lingle is buying more time to make a final decision on contentious legislation that would allow same-gender couples to form civil unions in Hawaii.
Lingle announced Monday that the bill is on her potential veto list. She must sign or veto each of the bills by July 6, or allow them to become law without her signature.
The civil unions measure would allow same- and opposite-gender couples to form civil unions, with almost all the rights and responsibilities of marriage.
Five states already grant essentially all the rights of marriage to same-sex couples without authorizing marriage itself. Five other states and the District of Columbia permit same-sex marriage.
